Thomas S. Woods, Ph.D., Principal Consultant, joined CPS in May, 2007, with extensive expertise in global crop protection regulatory affairs and experience in technology licensing, product formulation technology, and intellectual property management.

Prior to joining CPS, Tom was Manager of Global Regulatory Affairs for the DuPont Crop Protection Products business. During this assignment, he worked with regulatory authorities of developing countries to encourage the adoption of stringent product quality requirements. As a direct result of Tom’s efforts, several countries adopted into their laws the rigorous quality standards that are embedded in the FAO/WHO specification procedures. He also developed considerable understanding and expertise in the recently adopted REACH chemical regulatory legislation in the European Union. He is now available to assist other organizations as they undertake to meet their REACH compliance obligations.

Tom served as Chairman of the Specifications Expert Group of CropLife International and the European Crop Protection Association. In this capacity, he was recognized by the crop protection industry as an effective advocate in negotiations with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations, on matters of product quality and technical aspects of product specifications.

During his thirty-year career with the DuPont Company, Tom held various management positions, including international technology assignments in France and India. He led focused efforts in organic chemistry discovery, patent oversight, product formulation development, R&D administration, and out-licensing of technology to interested companies. His reputation, credentials, and personal dedication to global agriculture are widely recognized among members of the global agricultural community.

Tom holds a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois, where he conducted research under the leadership of Professor Peter Beak. He has lectured at numerous international conferences, and has authored more than twenty scientific publications, including chapters in “The Encyclopedia of Agrochemicals” and “Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry.” Tom also holds four U.S. and international patents covering novel crop protection products.

Prior to joining DuPont, Tom served as an officer in the U.S. Army, where he conducted research in anti-malaria and anti-radiation chemistry at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, D.C. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for this scientific work.
